Subject: [Nature Recordists] Tips for recording Dolphins
Hello everyoneIn the small town where I live, on the south-east coast of
Sicily, in a marine reserve very close to the town, dolphins are often
spotted.I own a pair of Hydrophones Acquarian H2a and a friend could help me
with his small boat. I know almost nothing about these beautiful mammals. What
is the right way to approach them? What is the right time?I know that there are
two types, some migrate and some are sedentary.Any kind of suggestion, books or
any other information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
BestFrancesco

Hi Francesco, besides the rules and guidelines to reduce the disturbance to
dolphins, there are some tips useful to improve recording quality.
First, recordings should be made with very calm water because any up-down
movement of the hydrophones in the water makes low frequency noise, thus
I'd suggest to use the HP filter in your recorder, if available, and to
manage by hand the cable to dump any vertical movement and the rubbing of
the cable on the side of the boat. If there is current, deploy the
hydrophone on the side where the hydrophon is pulled away.
If you have a long cable let the hydrophon go down as much as possible. If
you have two hydrophones you can experiment to have one few meters deep and
one deeper, possibly below the thermocline that could be at 20 - 30 meters.
This way you can liste to close dolphins in the sub-surface acoustic
channel and deep diving dolphins below the thermocline.
Which recorder do you have ? if possible sample at 96 kHz or 192 kHz, 24
bits.
Feel free to write me privately for additional practical info also abou the
analysis of your recorded data.
