i asked myself the same question when initially putting together my MS
rig, and while the decision was eventually made for me (by getting a
good deal on a used 30/40 pair) i have never regretted what i ended up
with. i use it for both field recording and for documentary film work,
and my (not at all scientifically tested) impression has been that the
wider-patterned 40 offers a little more flexibility in how the rig is
used than the narrower 50 would. somebody might be able to shoot down
that evidenceless theory, but in any case i've always found the 40 to do
what i needed when more directionalily is called for (voice, interview,
etc).
