I came to the same conclusion regarding the self noise of the Sennheiser MK=
H418S. Most of the noise is in the Side mic. If you pair a mono MKH416 as a=
 Mid mic with an MKH30 bidi for the Side mic, you get stereo imaging that i=
s similar to the 418S but with significantly lower self noise. NPR uses its=
 418S for closer miking of stronger sources, you can hear it used in their =
series of online =93Tiny Desk Concerts.=94 It does quite well there, but no=
t so well trying to capture wildlife from a distance.
