Hi all, I would add something to the note sent by Bernie. Since 2014 I'm
recording biophonies in a integral nature reserve in central Italy. The
place is Sassofratino, a lovely place in the core of the National Park
"Foreste Casentinesi". The Sassofratino reserve is surrounded by mountains
and other nature reserves, there is only a white road, close to public
traffic, to approach the boundaries of the reserve that is totally
interdicted (no human presence or action is allowed inside). The reserve is
managed by Carabinieri Forestali. There there is an impressive silence
where any natural sound stands out. The only human noise is given by
airplane overflights. In between natural sounds the background noise at low
frequencies (<500 Hz) is close to 0 dB, sometimes below 0 dB !, and special
equipment is required to prove this. The level of biodiversity and biophony
there is among the highest in Italy, and the very ancient forest is now
listed in the UNESCO patrimony.
