Digital Noise Reduction

Hi All,=0D
=0D
I have been meaning to ask this for a while and it seems appropriate after =
the discussion on mic and pre-amp self-noise.=0D
=0D
I used to be a live sound engineer but now work 9-5 and moonlight as a Prod=
uction Sound Mixer for local short film/commercials/ corporates etc. semi-p=
rofessionally, so I have some reasonably high-end kit available. I have wan=
ted to record some soundscapes for a while and have been giving it a go rec=
ently after reading one of Bernie's books whilst recuperating from a foot i=
njury. However the results have been disappointing due to the high noise fl=
oor at the gain required. I am using a Sound Devices 633 (which seems nois=
ier generally than the old 702 which i traded to buy it) and either a Schoe=
ps CMIT 5U or a pair of AKG CK91/SE300B's.=0D
=0D
It isn't practical at the moment for me to buy different gear just for soun=
dscapes, and although I will be able to get 'closer to the action' when my =
foot is better I think noise will still be a problem, so my question is, wh=
at is the general consensus on the use of digital noise reduction in nature=
recordings? I use it extensively on film work and modern NR plugins are a=
stonishingly good but they do leave artefacts. Especially on nature recordi=
ngs where the subtle low level details in a sound are particularly importan=
t. Compared to mic and pre hiss, are noise reduction artefacts the lesser o=
f two evils?=0D

Here's a test recording as a demo. The mic was handheld as I couldn't carr=
y a stand whilst on crutches, but it gives you an idea of the problem: 633=
