Here is what one of the seabird surveyors commented regarding the vocalisat=
ion of birds at sea.
"Seabirds are never quite as vocal at sea unless in feeding concentrations =
at sea - Gannet, Kittiwake, Fulmars, Shearwaters, Terns and Gulls can be ve=
ry vocal when large feeding concentrations interact.
This time of year will see Guillemot and Razorbill parents calling to their=
young and there is often a lot of calling between parents and chicks when =
birds are rafting.
Kittiwake can also be quite vocal in transit, though most other species eve=
n large gulls and terns can remain silent unless being pursued by Skua or o=
ther gulls for food or using contact calls when migrating in groups.
Most ducks, grebes and divers are silent, mainly because they actively avoi=
d vessels."
