Thanks, Norman. It looks like the DM-620 might be the version of the DM-670=
on this side of the pond. The LS-7 is good enough for my purposes anyway, a=
nd I already have one. It's not as quiet as my LS-11 in combination with th=
e EM172s, but it's much quieter than the SM3.
Some combination of these ideas should get me going. I'll report back when =
I have a working unit, which may take a while.
=A0Thanks for everyone's input. This list is the greatest.

I've found that faux fur will keep one night of rain away from my WL183 ele=
ctrets. The problem for me has been the thudding that drops on the fur make=
. I'm actively working on ideas similar to yours all the time.
My next project experiment is to use a flimsy metal circular frame around w=
hich I can wrap whichever fabric works best and to mount a very steep sided=
"tent roof" of tent material on the top of it. The dummy head should be dr=
y inside all that.
I've tried a few recorders with timers. The LS7 ( LS3 - in my case ) I trie=
d wasn't very quiet. The olympus dictaphone DM670 has a timer and I think i=
t's a shade quieter if your capsules are high enough output to allow using =
the lower gain setting, as mine are. It doesn't record 24 bit or above 48kh=
z though.
The best recorder with a timer that I've so far tried is the now discontinu=
ed yamaha C24. Not quite as quiet as a sony M10 but close, and it's very ti=
ny and light. I can even use it tucked under a hat with mics near my ears i=
n the hat turnup, works great for urban 'people' ambiances etc. That one re=
cords up to 96/24.

Hi John,
your projects sounds very interesting! I don't have any first-hand advice t=
o give you, but recently read=A0something that could be interesting for you=
:
http://www.oldbird.org/mike_home.htm

this is the design of a boundary microphone to record night migrating bird =
calls. As the device is typically placed in open and exposed places, the tr=
ick seems simple but functional as recording sessions are migration long, 3=
or 4 months. Anyway others could have better ideas.
If you come to a solution for your autonomous recorder I would be pleased t=
o read the results and design as I'm interested in the matter too!all the b=

 Subject: [Nature Recordists] Weatherproofing Mics?

=A0 I would like to build an autonomous, weatherproof recorder using a Pe=
lican case, an Olympus LS-7 (because of its timer function) and EM172 capsu=
les. I'm imagining somehow mounting the capsules on either side of the case=
, perhaps flush with the sides to get a little bit of a boundary effect. Do=
es anyone here have experience trying this and having success creating a we=
atherproof and wind-protected mounting for the capsules? Are you willing to=
 share your experience?
I have been using a Wildlife Acoustics SM3 recorder, and while it is very r=
obust, completely weatherproof, and has a very flexible timer system, it is=
also very noisy, much noisier than I am used to with my homemade EM172-bas=
ed boundary array. It is also fairly expensive, and if I can create somethi=
ng at a lower cost I can deploy several of them simultaneously. But the sel=
f-noise is the main thing.

Thus I am hoping to recreate the EM172 boundary array - or something simila=
r - in a waterproof package using off-the-shelf components. I can figure ou=
t most of it, but I have never figured out how to waterproof an electret ca=
psule. Is it even possible?

Any ideas or leads to online resources would be greatly appreciated.
=A0Many thanks.
