John,
Your featuring the Barn Swallow brought to mind the migration of Purple Martins
discussed on the recent "The Nature Of Things" program, "Songbird SOS",
narrated by David Suzuki. It discusses the geolocators, used by Bridget
Stutchbury, to track their migration route and timing. Its real focus is the
perils that these and other migratory birds face during their travels, and the
startling declines in their numbers.
As nature recordists some out there might be interested in Bill Evans' set-up
for recording birds migrating in the night skies. It can be viewed at
http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episodes/songbirdsos While there is some very
interesting information about the program here, unfortunately the program
itself can only be viewed in Canada. The creators are just finishing up the
cinema version "The Messenger", for release in North America, as well as a
European version, both of which go into even greater depth on the issue. I had
a very limited opinion-oriented (bird song) involvement, and have no financial
interest. They are just excellent productions, and very timely. Their website
is www.Songbirdsos.com.
All the best,
Ernie Jardine
