The other reason to use transformers with musical instruments over here is=

for safety isolation from 240 volts faults. There have been a few casualtie=
s
in the past including a guitarist playing in a bath.

For general audio work, transformers are the only way of getting a fully
floating line (as opposed to a balanced line) which is sometimes necessary=

with my 150 metre (500 ft) long cables as I have found at my rural retreat.=

This has a high tension mains supply transformer. I once measured 12 V AC
between the electrical supply ground and actual land ground. In wet weather=

corona fizz from the 11,000 volt incoming line can also be a problem

As for signal loss I have found Sowter transformer loss is only 1 or 2 dB
for a large saving in hum and fizzle.
