My conclusion when I first heard the recordings was that there was a very good limiter at the digitiser stage. (All A to D's need a limiter.) The maximum peaks were all within 3 dB or so and fireworks aren't made to that= precision. What was welcome was that the recovery time was very fast and it= didn't leave a "hole" after each peak which ruins the bang. I come from a different age and still hanker after the peak distortion of tape recording for big bangs. As the peak level approaches 100% magnetic saturation, it progressively distorts the bang which give a full-blooded effect which mimics the ear's overloading, and which you don't hear nowadays. Thanks for the recordings - it sounded like good fun. BTW if anyone wants an explanation of magnetic tape limiting, I have one. David Brinicombe |
