Clive, Mike & all,

I downloaded the wav file and listened carefully using headphones but
can hear no difference in noise levels, with and without the S/N 100
db feature. So I'd just not bother with it, for nature recording.

Re height of tripod, just try it and see what you like best. Opinions
in this group range from on the ground to very high up and everything
in between. It may also depend on what is quickest to set up in the
field, in my case that is often 'adult standing height' and involves
no bending nor ladder climbing :-)

Do other people have trouble with Soundcloud? The format has changed
since I last used it and I can no longer 'wait till the sound loads
then listen a number of times'. I get one listen, usually to an
incomplete file, then when I go back to the beginning it has to
download all over again. grrrrrrr!! Any workarounds?
