Greetings,

For a couple of years now, due to limited funds, I have been putting off
purchasing a good quality recorder to use with two AT 3032 microphones
that I purchased at a very reasonable price. Those mics have sat in a
drawer because I do not have a recorder with quiet preamps that supplies
48V phantom power. I can't afford a Sound Devices recorder, more's the
pity. I think a 702 would serve me well. I was saving for one, but was set
back by the substantial price increase of the Sound Devices products about
a year ago. I keep hoping something new and affordable will appear on the
market, but it almost seems the opposite: prices go up or quality goes
down. I currently record with an LS-11 and a range of mics (NT-4, ME66,
EM172-based SASS).

I am revisiting the question of which recorder/mixer to consider, and
wonder if I am missing any. I am assuming a maximum noise level of -125
dBu(A) to avoid adding noise to the AT3032s. Here is my list of current
recorders/mixers in the under US$1000 range. Are there any others of which
I am not aware?

SD Mixpre-D
SD USBpre 2
Fostex FR-2LE
Tascam DR-680
Marantz PMD661
Marantz PMD671
Olympus LS-100

I have also seen used Shure mixers (FP33, FP24) on eBay from time to time.

I know each of these has its advantages and limitations. For me the most
important features are the sound quality and the battery life.

Any other recorders/mixers I should be aware of?

John
