need to get a second decent mic to start with.

Martin,
What you need is a mixer to adjust the individual levels from each mic. For
high quality and best results, you would use a low noise mixer pre-amp and
feed it into the line in of the recorder.
Much simpler and cheaper is a passive mixer which is simply several volume
controls connected together. The weakest input should be mixed at maximum
level, with louder mics or mic rigs faded down a bit.
Passive mixers are a cheap and cheerful solution to combining any sound
signals and giving you various input plug options.
