The specs say "-115dBV equivalent input noise", which I think might put it =
in the "ok" bracket. I assume a lot of what you pay for them goes towards r=
obustness and programming flexibility.
After the recent purchase of a 32GB SDHC card for my M10, I'm becoming very=
interested in the idea of long unattended recordings. I'm wondering how I =
can make my homemade SASS weatherproof without affecting the sound quality.=
I assume I need to prevent the foam nose from becoming waterlogged as well=
as just protecting the electrical components.
I also really like the idea of a robust case, with the recorder in the same=
enclosure so I don't have to worry about cables getting tangled, but for a=
SASS it's going to have to have some big holes.

lo")
Hmmmm.
They are an interesting system. They are a two channel recorder, using cust=
om omni mics. The recording quality is quite good, but not up to say a pair=
of Sennheiser ME-62's on a Fostex Fr-2LE. (All I have to compare to). Stil=
l, with minimal editing they produce a very usable recording.
You can either mount the mics directly on the box, giving you an AB array w=
ith a seperation of about 20cm, or you can use extension cables - up to 50m=
. I typically use a 3m extension cable and mount the two mics about 2m apar=
t.
You can also get ultrasonic mics, and hydrophones, allowing you to play wit=
h all sorts of combinations. We use one audio mic and one hydrophone to rec=
ord above/below water soundscapes as heard by platypus....
There's lots of other tricks the box is capable of too. It has very complex=
scheduling abilities - for environmental sampling you can set it to record=
for 10 minutes every hour, or from sunset to sunrise, or 3 hours every day=
, or...
It can record at up up to 96kHz 16-bit, or you can buy an option to go up t=
o 196 kHz.
Takes 4 x SDHC cards, so has a fair amount of memory.
I use it mainly for getting 24-hour recording in flying-fox camps...recordi=
ng at 48 kHz 16-bit this gives me a continuous recording of what's going on=
, straight out of the recorder it's clear and usable for analysis, but with=
very minimal editing it's actually quite listenable as well.
Of course, it's not the same quality as (say) a pair of MKH-20's into a SD =

Horses for courses.

I've heard of those. How does the recording quality compare to, say, an M10=
