So you rather over-stated the point when you wrote: "I can't say I've ever =
heard an MP3 version that sounds as good as a Wav version". This opinion is=
 in fact restricted to a very small subset of recorded music. It also must =
be noted that choices of microphones, configuration, pre-amp, and mixing wi=
ll affect how the finished recordings bear up to perceptual encoding.

All of this is true for nature recordings as well.

As an aside, here is an interesting online study, in which many respondents=
 actually preferred the MP3 versions.
