Unbalanced ground

Hi all
While searching something on the net I came across something that puzzled m=
e. I read a suggestion that the ground connection in an unbalanced cable, s=
hould only be connected at one end?? Comments please.
While on the subject (which I am at the moment, due to making up a Y split =
cable for my new AT-8022), is one of the normal coloured connection leads s=
ufficient to carry the ground connection, or should the screening always be=
used please? I should say here that I had one hell of a job getting cable =
to connect to the five pin connector on the AT-8022! I ended up buying some=
non flexible 6 core plus shield, which I'll bind to star quad. What I thou=
ght would be a reasonably simple job, certainly isn't!
Cheers
Max
