Also check out freesound [1], another cc-licensed archive of user-submitted sounds, but with a wider scope than soundtransit (everything from nature recordings to drum loops). The sounds cost nothing, but you must respect the license that the uploader designates. This varies from "use them however you want" to "you can't make money off my sounds" (Read the details here: http://www.freesound.org/help/faq/#licenses-0 [2] ) Freesound is an amazing community. For commercial projects it's also important to consider the added value of professionally recorded sounds, and the contribution to the community that you make by paying for them (or offering to donate to folks who offer their sounds on freesound or soundtransit).
