All night call
If these are squirrels, I've never heard them call continuously all
night from the end of the evening chorus to dawn. I first picked them
(at least three) the night before last on my garden mics 150 metres
away (500 old feet). Last night, listening out in my bedroom, I
got out of bed and put up a second pair on a 75 metre cable run
(that's dedication). It's just as well, as everything is silent
tonight.
Squirrels was my first thought once I'd eliminated owls on my distant
mics. They have been very quiet this year and last year they dominated
my recordings. They were in tall conifers and broadleaf and moved
about quite quickly, later shifting into the deep woodland and away
from my second pair but I could still hear them. The background was a
grain mill about a mile away which unfortunately happened to be in
line with the very directional MKH-816 mics. At dawn I also picked up
a farm radio half a mile across the valley.
