Hi Chuck,
My suggestion would be to buy two Primo EM172 mic capsules from
frogloggers.com.
They are comparatively low-noise omnidirectional mics, cost about $10 each and
run well on the plug-in power commonly supplied by 3.5mm mic inputs on
recorders such as the Olympus LS-10 and Sony PCM-M10.
Have a search through the messages here regarding baffled/boundary omni mic
techniques, there are lots of ideas from knowledgeable folks for building nice
sounding stereo setups.
The EM172 can also be easily mounted in a parabola.
If you need a mic with XLR connectors, the Naiant PFA is a good way to
interface the EM172 capsules to phantom-powered XLR inputs.
