<<I hardly dare even say it, but after several months of occasional
recording often in humid or damp conditions, my current set of MKH
8020s seem to be OK with no fizzing or popping episodes.>>

Huzzah!

<<This was the third replacement set of mics that Sennheiser sent me.
They said they had completely redesigned them, and the problem had
always been to do with earthing within the capsules. Sennheiser in
Sydney told me <The new batch of microphones have a new housing, for
better earth connection>
The new mics don't look any different but I did notice that the
element now has a slightly textured surface, whereas the earlier
versions were shiny smooth. That could be one way for anyone to pick
whether they have new or old versions of this type of mic.>>

I'd say Sennheiser owe you a big favor for beta testing their product under=
field conditions. Certainly they have tested rigorously in studio & concer=
t halls but quite likely it hasn't occurred to them that the mics will be l=
eft outdoors under considerably greater stress by the niche legion of natur=
e recordists. I recommend when they finally get around to designing a figur=
e 8 80x0 model they send you the prototype to see if Antipodean conditions =
can break it.
Glad they're finally (knock on wood) working.
