A recording recently from Central America brings the Montezuma Oropendola. =
This is a bird that uses its syrinx to the maximum and one that I particula=
rly love.
This is one of my most favorite bird vocalizations. Recorded in Belize, thi=
s is the Montezuma Oropendola. The strange and remarkable song of the Monte=
zuma Oropendola is an ascending series of overlapping bubbly syllables whic=
h crescendo to a high peak. The song is often accompanied by a scratchy ca=
ll that is reminiscent of a fizzling firecracker or the ripping of a thick =
fabric (Stiles & Skutch 1989). A single-syllable whiney eeuh call seems to =
function as a contact call between birds. Howell and Webb (1995)
