The more your media is dependent on a certain technology the more trouble you
are in. This is not just tapes and discs. Even six or seven year old hard
drives are no longer compatible with new computers. Some DLT tape suppliers
promise fairly long shelf life but nothing of this sort is permanent. If moving
from one kind of physical storage to another is not feasible, then one must
accept that at some point in time you will loose your material.
Best to think of backup as process, not a technology. As many know, backup is
done regularly in some kind of tiered process that includes copying your
material periodically (to new and current media) and redundantly (keep a local
copy and also send one to a second location). Lately these cloud storage
solutions offer some alternatives. Time, of course, will tell.
