Mastering Nature Recordings

<<I am finishing a project where I recorded a series of sounds in
nature and then arranged them along a timeline to play the length of a
cd, a little over an hour. I would like to have the cd mastered by
someone who has the right equipment and the right expertise.
Everything I have learned about recording sounds in nature is that it
is much different than other types of recording. Is mastering the same
story? >>

Yes & no. Technically, CD mastering is CD mastering, i.e. the
production of a final version from which duplication can take place.
Aesthetically, there are different issues to address than in music
mastering, however, the mastering engineer is really in the service of
the artist/composer/client, so whatever you wish to be done is what
the mastering process needs to accomplish. Generally a lot of the
techniques appropriate to music production are either not necessary or
not desirable when dealing with nature recordings, however standards
of recorded audio quality are still are in effect, regardless of the
source material. Most likely the mastering needs will be more in the
direction of ameliorating noise & not about altering dynamics or
spectrum, which is mostly what goes on in music mastering.

<<Most professional mastering company's I have contacted are expensive
and focused on music. Thank you in advance any advice! >>

Well, expensive is relative. I do professional CD mastering. It is
mostly music because that's what people are mostly recording &
releasing. But I'm also a nature recordist & I understand the
aesthetic needs of both pursuits. If you want to email me off list to
discuss further I'd be happy to accommodate.
