Gosh that previous post took me back...
I remember reading Hollerith (sp?) code and paper tape code a long time ago=
.
At any rate, I design with flash now in this lifetime. =A0The limit on read=
/write cycles is disappearing. =A0Slow writes are still an issue and while =
I don't have any life tests handy as I write this, I don't imagine that the=
re are shelf life issues that would apply to something that is part of a br=
oader archive strategy.
As media becomes more reliable, the larger issue is fast becoming physical =
security. Maintaining good storage conditions is often overlooked. Hedging =
your bet is important. Flash or CD can be augmented with each other and per=
iodic copies to new media every few years refreshes the lifetime clock. =A0=
Hedging your geographical bet reduces risk from fire, earthquake, theft etc=
.
Personally, I back up to spinning disk. It's so cheap these days. Spinning =
redundant RAID which is only spun up for back ups is nearly guaranteed to s=
urvive (at least one of the copies) until the interface becomes obsolete.
