The kind of noise you're describing, distant, highly diffuse, mostly
low/low-mid range, is not really directional & will exist in equal
measure in front as well as to the sides of any direction you point a
mic. I wouldn't count on any real improvement at rejecting that sort
of background ambience with a tighter directional pattern. It will
really need filtering & noise reduction software in post production.
