Hi Aaron,
You're right to make no assumptions but its a little assuring to know
that it takes very bad designing to make noisy line inputs. For those
who might want to explore this approach to a low cost/high quality
surround rig, I'd suggest the RME QuadMic. Its not very well known
here in the US but matches what most of us would consider top-notch
pre performance in terms of noise, has 60 dB of gain, runs on DC and
costs less than one MixPre.
