LEARN ABOUT NATURE SOUND RECORDING
AT THE =91SOUNDS OF NATURE=92 WORKSHOP
AT THE MURIE CENTER,
OPERATING ON THE MURIE RANCH, A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
IN GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK.
Wild Sanctuary and The Murie Center present a unique opportunity to
turn fans of nature
into active nature recordists at a special 4 day/4 night field
recording workshop, June 24 =96
28, 2009. This year's notable =91soundscape-centered=92 event will take =
place in the shadow
of the Tetons at The Murie Center in Grand Teton National Park.
Located near the south
entrance to the Park at Moose, Wyoming, nestled in the spruce forest a
short trail from
the wild and scenic Snake River. The non-profit Murie Center is
convenient to several
resonant biomes in the Greater Yellowstone =96Teton region, an area well =
known for its
abundant iconic wildlife, scenic beauty and biodiversity. Here the
buffalo truly roam and
the deer, antelope and elk play (within view of the grizzly, grey
wolves and cougars). The
theme will be "Sounds of Nature=92.
Featured workshop leaders include three of the nation=92s top soundscape =
experts: Martyn
Stewart (www.naturesound.org), Kevin Colver (www.7loons.com), and
Bernie Krause
(www.wildsanctuary.com) joining to provide a =91tech-friendly mash up=92 =
of educational
seminar, location recording experience, and creative retreat.
Participants will learn all about the art and science of nature sound
recording and obtain
the personal guidance, classroom instruction, and hands-on outdoor
experience to simply
=91learn the basics=92 or to further refine and improve existing nature =
observation and
recording skills from the engaging trio of engaging professional audio/
naturalists.
=93This workshop is appropriate for everyone, nearly every age, from
professional audio
engineers to people who simply love to listen to the music of nature,=94 =
says bioacoustician
Bernie Krause. =93We=92ll specifically address a new organic approach to =
natural
sound recording and explore a more holistic awareness of the natural
world, as we sample
the entire range of the creature chorus present.=94
Daily sessions will cover a variety of topics including: finding
soundscape locations;
choosing equipment; recording in the field, microphone placement,
editing, and analysis
software techniques that enables a way to visualize waves of sound -
or the song of a bird
- converted to a spectrograph image; troubleshooting and equipment
maintenance;
cataloging and use of sounds, and mid-day review and discussion of
dawn and evening
chorus recording sessions. Gather revealing =91insider=92s tips and
techniques=92 or share in
travel and nature stories with the globetrotting guides. For this mix
of acoustic ecologists,
communication is part of the fun. Casual discussions of current
National Park Service
efforts =91for the preservation of natural soundscapes or the
=91disappearing resource of
quietude=92 will likely evoke lively group discussions amid the program.
=93The sounds of these creatures never fails to astonish people,=92
concluded Krause.
=93Participants will become proficient nature recordists before they
know it.=94
The instructors are dedicated to the recording and presentation of
natural soundscapes.
