I'm not quoting.
Hi, Justin,
This is triggered by your thread, but I have no personal experience
so I won't discuss a vendor, but some thoughts. Comments (a) and (b)
refer to my audio tape restoration work.
(a) International shipping is expensive and a headache. Sometimes it
takes over a half hour to fill out the customs paperwork. Should I
charge my full studio rate for that? No, I generally end up eating
that half hour.
(b) I find myself sometimes having to estimate international shipping
before I have the finished client tapes and optical media in hand. I
usually estimate high. I will either throw in some additional service
or, if inexpensive, refund the money to the client if there is a
substantial overage on shipping. Or, the client can pay for return
shipping on their FedEx account.
(c) Warranties are usually voided by mods. I don't know where to find
it, but I thought it was common knowledge.
(d) I struggled with the concept of a modded device versus one that
really works the way I want it out of the box. I ended up with a
Sound Devices 722. In the end, is it that much more expensive (all
things considered that (i) you can get a 702 and a 32 GB CF card
instead, (ii) you are not fussing with the mods and the risks, (iii)
you have a really pro and rugged recorder)? Also, there have been
good reports here about the Zoom H2 and a Sound Devices Mix Pre. I'm
not sure how that stacks up against the modded Marantz, but it would
be interesting to do a full set of measurements.
Just some thoughts as we struggle with the global marketplace and
widely varying quality levels.
Cheers,
Richard
