It is first class softaware and has by now quite a long tradition of use in=
 several (subfields) of bioacoustics. I've worked with several students who=
 used the program as their main data manipulation and extraction tool --- a=
ll were very successful.

I wouldn't be surprised if other programs can perform similar functions, bu=
t SASLab Pro is a package that provides what lots of researchers need in a =
convenient, well tested, and generally well understood package. It certainl=
y provides access to measurements that programs like Audacity don't.

For the time that researchers spend using such software, the differences in=
 the prices don't seem all that significant to me and, if I were reviewing =
a proposal, I'd be inclined to let the people pick their own tools.
