Apologies for the cross posting, it's been a good while since the last of

to make sure new members in (or interested in) the San Francisco Bay area
were aware of
this mailing list and the events Jeremiah Moore and I are [irregularly]
producing.
Short version: recordist Gordon Hempton will be joining BASE (Bay Area Soun=
d

to LISTEN as
Sound recordist (and author) Gordon Hempton joins us to share
as many examples of his work and favorite recordings as we can
convince him to, and to discuss his new book, named after the
project that inspired it, ONE SQUARE INCH OF SILENCE.
Details on the book can be had here:
http://onesquareinch.org/book/
If you are interested in getting a copy at BASEbot, please write
me right away, as Gordon may be able to bring copies for us.
Gordon is interested not so much in making a long presentation,
as in engaging in dialog about issues of common interest to many
BASE members: the natural soundscape, efforts to preserve it,
the challenges of recording it, and many related topics. So this
may be not so much a lecture, as a discussion.
As usual, as interest and time allow, after our discussion there will be an
open-salon listening and discussion period - providing an opportunty
to play your short (under five minute) sound excerpts and to discuss
ideas or works in progress. We will provide a CD player and minijack
hookup for iPods and the like.
The event will be recorded and made available via our forthcoming
podcast.
About Gordon Hempton
Gordon Hempton is an international acoustic ecologist and Emmy Award-
winning sound recordist. For nearly 25 years he has provided professional
audio services to musicians, galleries, museums, and media producers. He
has received recognition from the Charles A. Lindbergh Fund, National
Endowment for the Arts, and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise.
A botany graduate of the University of Wisconsin (1976) with graduate
studies in plant pathology (1980), Gordon Hempton began recording the
sounds of nature in Washington State, embarking on numerous backpacking
trips into the wilderness.
People Magazine published a prominent center page article on May 30 1988,
"Listening for the Vanishing Sounds of Silence, Gordon Hempton Wishes
Civilization Would Lower Its Voice.=94 With a circulation of 24 million
copies,
this publicity drew national attention to the fact that natural soundscapes
were vanishing and only Hempton was preserving them.
Hempton continues his work in publishing, sound design, consulting and
location recording services to major clients such as Microsoft, Smithsonian=
,
National Geographic, Discovery, and National Public Radio, while also
maintaining his passion for preserving vanishing sounds.
