When I first listened to Curt's test with my aging ears on speakers,
I didn't notice any difference between the two recorders. When I made
a sonogram the next morning to see if I had missed anything, I was
shocked.
To better reveal the performance differences, I edited the ticks so
the edit point falls in the middle of the room presence between ticks
4 and 5 (rather than immediately before 5). The additional clarity in
the lower mid-range and reduction in hiss in the SD 722 is pretty
apparent. The uniform noise added above 9K Hz by the Fostex is
definitely worth further exploration. Curt is conducting a similar
test again; perhaps others with FR-2LE's might want to see if they
can duplicate these results.
