Don't know if there is interest in the group for eliminating noise
from otherwise important tracks. If so, I just received the latest
version of SoundSoap Pro by BIAS and tested it on an old wax cylinder
recording, arguably the worst example(s) of noise vs signal. The
recording is of the last native speaker of the Southern Yana tribe of
California Native Americans, Ishi, who was found cowering in a N.
California barn in 1911 after all 3000 of his tribe were wiped out by
vigilantes during the Gold Rush while securing land. Then he was taken
by one of the early anthropologists and put on exhibit, live, at the
Hearst Museum in Golden Gate Park, where he lingered until his death
by consumption in 1916. It's a great story, but the recovery of his
tracks is seminal to an understanding of the language as it would be
with deciphering the language of the natural world. Hence, this
report. The audio clip contains a 30 second example of the original
wax cylinder recording followed by the same clip cleaned up.
Considering the quality of the original very few artifacts remain when
compared with other options.
