Charles,

I would say get everything set up and connected then switch on the
recorder. Doesn't matter so much for headphones, but certainly mics
that use phantom power shouldn't be connected or disconnected with the
power active. The Tascam HD-P2 I use has a switch for cutting out
phantom power without shutting the whole unit down, others may have
the same or offer the option through a software menu. On the whole
though I prefer to play it safe and have everything "cold" before I
start making or breaking connections!
