For what it's worth.
I looked at several pre-amps and in the end found that if you want a quiet =
mic pre then you really need to look at the Sound Devices MixPre. It has 'p=
robably' state-of-the- art mic preamps which come in a neat package that ru=
ns on the readily available AA cell. OK not cheap but if you were looking a=
t $300 pre-amps then you are not that far away really. I decided that havin=
g listened to the cheaper alternatives that the MixPre was indeed worth tha=
t bit extra in the end. You get phantom power as well plus a very usable me=
ter with which you can keep an eye on levels easily, all in a near package.=
