I have a marantz PMD 660 recorder and as you might know,
the batteries don't last too long. I wonder if I can use
an external battery with this recorder.
Marcelo,
The AC adapter for the PMD660 provides 2A of 5V DC power to the
PMD660. You could use a rechargeable battery pack that provides this
power. Here are a couple of examples.

Lithium-Ion battery packs are smaller and lighter than Ni-MH or
Ni-CAD, but are more expensive.
Another alternative is a battery pack designed for a Sony PSP
Playstation. The AC power adapter for the PSP provides 2.5A of 5V DC.

Or you could make a battery pack that holds a set of four C or D cells.
One problem people have reported with the PMD660 is that the electric
contacts in the battery compartment don't fit tight enough with some
rechargeable AA cells. The cells are just a tiny bit shorter than
disposable alkaline AA cells. One solution is to cut small squares of
stiff paper, like the type that is used for business cards, and place
the paper under the contacts. This will keep the contact tight
against the end of the battery.
In Costa Rica, humidity might make the paper squares too soft, so
substutute a small square of a plastic sheet.
Let us know what battery solution you choose.
