Hi Colin--
Welcome to the list.
Aside from ~5dB(A) lower self-noise, the NTG3 may not really sound
hugely different from your NT-3. Would you make an M-S stereo pair
eventually out of the NTG3? Recordists on this list have come up
with many lower cost, great sounding stereo rigs. The list archive is

If there is engaging natural activity within 1000' feet of your
house, you might want to consider setting up a live mic rig in an
all-weather housing for those days/night when its not possible for
you to get out. This can be quite rewarding and provides the option
to record using your computer which is easier than a portable
recorder in many respects. Rob D.
