You aren't alone, Martyn, in this opinion of Logic among other nature
recordists. I've used Logic Pro for the last 6 years and I've
observed quite a few folks approach Deck, Peak, Pro Tools, Logic Pro,
SoundTrack, Logic Express, Audacity, Amadeus, and QT Pro. While Logic
Pro provides many multi-track editing tools, the learning curve is
steep if one needs to primarily work with one stereo tracks,
straight- cuts and plug-ins. At first, simple tasks like cross-fades
seem less intuitive than with a two track editor like Peak. 50,000+
pro sound editors can't be all wrong. After a while, one begins to
see advantages in the "logic-ways" and if one needs to do involved
production tasks like surround mixing or complex mix patches,
climbing this learning curve pays off.

Cubase is cross-platform-- a tiny bit less "up-to-date" for mac
users-- but a very good and more affordable. Many prefer the
"intuitiveness" of Cubase over Logic. All the pro audio mixing apps
are pretty similar and powerful. I would still be using ProTools were
there more hardware options. I used Mackie Tracktion quite a bit when
it was free. Soundtrack has good interaction with Final Cut Pro like
Audition has with Premiere.

If there is something you're trying to do in Logic that you find
baffling, I may be able to provide a few tips. Contact me off-list.
One neat aspect is the ability of Logic (and other pro Apps) is the
ability to share editing/mixing sessions complete with all the plug
setting used, edits, fades etc. Rob D.
