I have a Sound Devices 744, and since it has phanotmpowered XLR mic ins the MX is the one. Others who use miniplug with PIP don;t' need the MX power unit. I had a fortunate circumstance, though, as some time back I replaced a client's wireless mics with new UHF ones, and inherited their old VHF WL Mics - and there were two WL83 (older model than 183) and they work just fine, for the small amount of soundscape recording I do... so I just got the MX power units and was good to go!
