Neal Ewers posts frequently about audio issues on the Blind Cool Tech
web site. A few weeks ago, Neal posted a podcast that demonstrates
how the new Edirol R-09HR noise floor compares to the original R-09,
the Zoom H2 and the Sony PCM-D50. The recordings are made using
internal mics. Later, recordings are made with the R-09HR and couple
of external mics, including inexpensive binaurals.
The actual recording tests start about 4 minutes into the file. The
comparison of recorders lasts for about 4 minutes, and the next 10
minutes are used to compare several external mics.
Here's the link to the MP3 file.

Be aware that Neal occasionally will slip and call the R-09HR the
"R-09," which adds a degree of confusion. The old R-09 appears only
at the beginning of the file for a direct comparison with the R-09HR.
Also, Neal can be a little long-winded at times.
These caveats aside, this is one of very few tracks I've heard that
capture several small recorders in action simultaneously. It gives
you an idea of the noise floor of the recorders, and tonal quality of
the built-in mics.
