Hi Roy--
There are some precautions for Hi-MD recording that greatly reduce 
the likelihood of lost data. Here's a handout we give to students 
that you can look over:

You might recognize a set-up step or two that you want to adopt. I'd 
guess that 90% of the time, lost data can be traced to powering 
problem but there are other precautions that will improve your 
chances. We rarely loose data including whole semesters without 
incident.
