If you are importing sound into a Mac (e.g. from an external
microphone), what audio editing software are you using? If you were
using Peak LE on OSX you can tweak the input levels via Audio/ Record
Settings/ Hardware Settings. (I have not used a USB mic so this may
not be relevant!)
