I got a Sony PCM D1 last month and have a few observations:
Good:
Nice and portable but not quite pocket sized.
Seems well built and designed.
Fairly good recording of birds within 10 meters.
Easy to set up on tripod or a small flexible-leg tripod wrapped
around a tree branch and left to record for a couple of hours while I
work elsewhere.
Easy to download files to computer via USB.
Uses 4 AA batteries. These last about 4-5 hours during recording.
Could be better:
The stereo recordings don't have the same depth and richness as those
made by my Sennheiser MKH 30/40 MS pair recorded on my SD 722. More
distant birds are fainter and harder to hear. I will need to observe
my birds ahead of time and know just where they are perching so I can
position the recorder about 2-3 meters from the anticipated performance.
I can't tell how to limit file sizes to one hour so I often get a 2
hour recording on one file.
It would be nice to be able to leave the machine out in the evening
and have it begin recording at a set time but this feature is not
available.
Sooooo... It's a nice portable backup and 2nd line recorder but
doesn't give top of the line recordings. Fun to put out at a good
spot and come back to see what I got. Needs to be fairly close to
the subject for best quality recordings. I haven't tried using other
mics fed into the recorder, only the built in mics.
I also tried it at home and it recorded a harp performance and my cat
purring beautifully. Does very well with higher source sound volumes
and close proximity to the sound source.
