My usual practice for low-profile urban recording is: Shure 183s >
Sound Professionals PIP battery box/hpf > Hi-MD on "Low Sens" setting.
This gives reliable protection from low-frequency bumps and gets the
gain staging just about right. In cases where I don't expect to
encounter much low-frequency stuff, I'll sometimes go direct into the
Hi-MD, still on "Low Sens." In rare brutal conditions I've resorted to
dynamic mics, which require the "High Sens" setting.

For quiet natural recordings, I my current practice is to run AT3032s
into either the FR-2LE or into a SD Mix Pre > Hi-MD line in.
