Hmmm.  Thanks Danny and Kevin.  These Sony units are very attractive for our 
purposes.  We are planning to package 1 or 2 sets of equipment to send around 
to park and refuge managers, who will then obtain recordings from targeted 
habitats.  If these units (especially the PCM D50) can acquire half decent 
recordings, then we can purchase more units and increase our coverage 
significantly.  The small size also would be much easier to ship than the big 
CZM microphones and Marantz recorder.   I also will try to contact Tony for his 
advice.

Or the PCM D50...save $1000!

Group member Tony Celis is doing research into precisely this
subject...comparing what information can be absorbed through recordngs
as compared to live point counts. He'd be worth speaking to with
regards to the finer points of species identification.
