<<Hi, for ambient recording I love the combo SD722+Rhode NT1A microphones arranged either as near coincident YX or spaced XY to approximate a binaural recording, maybe with something absorbing in between the mics. Orientation could be a 60 to 90 degrees V depending on the scene width.>> Just for clarity in terminology, it should be noted that XY is always coincident, never spaced. As the mics are moved further apart, thus becoming near coincident or non-coincident, the term XY no longer is appropriate. Spaced directional mics generally fall into the NOS, ORTF or some variation of Jecklin configuration. Binaural is a specific subset of spaced omni mics, requiring the use of artificial pinnae on a dummy head to approximate HRTF directional cues. Scott Fraser |
