Not too long ago, there were few pocket-size recorders with decent
built-in mics. That situation has changed in the past two years.
Here's the list today, sorted by weight (lightest first):
Yamaha Pocketrak 2G
...announced but not yet available for purchase
Marantz PMD620
M-Audio Microtrack II
Edirol R-09
Zoom H2
Olympus LS-10
Korg MR-1
Tascam DR-1
Nagra ARES-M
Zoom H4
Nagra ARES-PII+
Sony PCM-D50
Sony PMD-D1
Of the group, the ARES-PII+ and Sony PMD-D1 sound the best, and also
are the largest and most expensive. You definitely will know when
these recorders are in your jacket pocket!
The Zoom H2 is the least expensive model listed, and is capable of
very good recordings with its built-in mics. The H2's external mic
input adds lots of noise, so it's not the best choice if you plan to
use external mics occasionally.
The Wingfield Audio web site shares recordings of cello music, choral
singing and speech made under similar conditions. It's a good place
to compare many of these recorders.
