Russ,
The Oade basic mod, for $150, will improve the sound of your 670 quite
a bit. Another company that performs well-regarded preamp upgrades is
Busman Audio.
However, there have been significant technical improvements since the
PMD670 was designed in 2003. My advice is to sell the PMD670, and
replace it with a Fostex FR-2LE.
The Fostex FR-2LE is superior in almost every way. It records at
rates up to 24/96, it's smaller and lighter, it has better sounding
preamps, it has inexpensive long-lasting battery options, and it's
cheaper. The FR-2LE is regularly available for $410 on eBay.
The only feature of the PMD670 not found in the FR-2LE is digital
audio input. If digital audio input is important to you, I'd
recommend that you look at the Sony PCM-D50, which costs about $475,
including built-in mics of useful quality and 4GB built-in flash memory.
You should be able to sell your PMD670 for at least $400. One place
to advertise is eBay, another is the Tapers Section Yard Sale forum.
