Thanks for the link, Jim! Quite a coincidence that Doug was inquiring
into this just 4 days earlier.

Unfortunately this news article does not describe how the scientists
deduced from the fact that the hummingbird spread his tail that the
tail was vibrating in the right way to create the sound. It's not at
all clear to me that the hummingbird wasn't simply spreading his tail
as a flight manuever, to swerve out of the dive. Can anyone shed light on t=
his?
