the two biggest problems to solve for laptop recording are:
1 - powering
2 - the sound acquisition device, as almost all laptops have poor
often mono input

To minimize powering problems it is preferable to use sound devices
powered by the laptop; this way you have to think at only one power
source. USB devices now offer good performances, but the most
advanced may require external powering. Check carefully the power
requirements: the best EMU USB devices require 48V powering that is
provided by a proprietary power adapter. No problems in the lab....
but in the field it is preferable to have devices to be dc powered in
the range 6 to 12V.
