Hello Jim, in this range of prices I'd suggest you had a look at
the Audio Technica's ATM10a (omni) and ATM33 (cardio). I prefer
omnis for interviews as they are less sensible to handling noise
and wind (including breath!). Moreover, you can use them in pretty
noisy environments by holding them only 3-5 cm away from your
interviewee's mouth, without the proximity effects that you would
encounter with a cardioid mic... and with a narrower "depth of
field", hence noise reduction. ATM10a is good-sounding, sturdy
and hot enough for an Edirol R-09 (I tried it with the Edirol R-1
with great satisfaction). I guess the ATM33 would be OK too.
